From: Colin Young
Location: Mt.Assiniboine Provincial Park, BC Canada
About the sandwich:
Climbing “the Nub” in Mt.Assiniboine provincial park, and forest fires have flooded the area with smoke.

A sandwich to match the conditions: Smoked polish sausage, mustard, a smoked cheese, and a rye bread as dark and thick as the smoke around us.

About the Sandwich: 12-grain bagel with a delicately spread cream cheese inner coating, hosted within were a few layers of nicely folded chipotle chicken and some romaine lettuce for flair. Not photographed but still important to note was that this sandwich had a twin brother who was consumed during the climb, foreshadowing the eventuality of this scrumptious summit sandwich.

The “Possible Horsemeat Naan-wich”

stale bread, unrefridgerated tube meat product.

From: Megan Jamer
Location: On the Pamir Plateau, Tajikistan
About the sandwich:
Well Folks, we kept it simple for our lunchtime picnic in Tajikistan. This is somewhat stale bread, unrefridgerated tube meat product (we think or hope beef but cannot read Russian). I would like the record to show that adding tomato paste was also an option, but I opted against – I really wanted the simple experience.

It tasted pretty good. Being surrounded by mountains always makes eating a sandwich feel special. I think this is because you feel productive and accomplished that you’re both in awesome nature, and you had the foresight to put together a picnic for yourself. But I’ll be honest, my biggest motivation for eating this sandwich is that we ate a Snickers bar afterwards.

Almond butter with St. Dalfour’s wild blueberry jam on two slices of dense and seedy danish mountain bread.

From: Elliott Hoppe
Location: Gothic Basin, North Cascades, WA
About the sandwich:
This sandwich was carefully crafted the night prior by combining almond butter with St. Dalfour’s wild blueberry jam on two slices of dense and seedy danish mountain bread. So dense was the bread that the sandwich in my pack nearly broke my back the next morning. After an early start and a long drive we started up one of the most beautiful and steep hikes I have ever completed. Once at the top I vivaciously dove into my sandwich with a side of avocado and washed it down with a swig of fresh alpine snowmelt.

From: David Steele

About the sandwich:
Ski mountaineering in March isn’t for the faint of heart, and neither are the heart stopping qualities of this decadently cheesed climbing fuel. Start with a Better Cheddar bagel, then add cream cheese (the good stuff) to one side, three slices of mozzarella, half a roma tomato, and half a ripe avocado. Perfect for long bits of front pointing or warming up at a belay, the fat content of this sandwich really shines for rapid adding of cold weather insulation. It also delivers a hefty calorie load in a relatively indestructible package suitable to your messy climbing pack. Layer up, chow down, and hop turn to your heart’s content.

From: Gary C
Location: Above Chamonix towards the Mt Blanc massif
About the sandwich:
Far from Australia it was hard to decide, was it the thought of French food, a tasty baguette filled with brie, lettuce, tomato and ham or the thought of hiking through the French Alps that drew me to Chamonix? I decided it was both.

About the sandwich:

My fingers were numb as I wrapped my hands around this sandwich-it was -20C out. But this meant that the snow was fluffy, so how cold the sandwich was a reminder that the skiing would be excellent! I was feeling pretty cheesy being thankful for things like health and good company.
