DENIED Sandwiches
The “Italian Vermonter”
From: Richie Scheim
Location: At the top of the Pinnacle in Stowe, VT
About the sandwich:
Honey oat Kaiser roll. Sriracha mayo and deli mustard. Roast turkey, Genoa salami, pepper jack cheese. Lettuce, tomato, onion, and banana peppers.
A 2 hour hike up the Pinnacle with my wife turned into a nearly 4 hour expedition! We overshot the lookout, missing the intersection to either end up here for lunch or continue on another steep 3 mile climb. We climbed through fallen trees and boulders for another 45 minutes before realizing we had done something wrong.
This Italian Vermonter was exactly what we needed when we finally arrived! Serious lunch with a view!
The “Merrill Brook Grinder”
From: Byron Haynes
Location: Photo taken on Wildcat Mt in New Hampshire looking at Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mt Washington
About the sandwich:
Developed in deep woods north of Errol of New Hampshire at the Dartmouth College Grant, the Merrill Brook Grinder it includes dense whole wheat brat, sardines packed in olive oil, red onions and stilton cheese, the riper the better. A garnish of arugula is a nice touch but not necessary.
The “Widowmaker”
From: Ian
Location: coastal mountains spuzzum b.c
About the sandwich:
I whipped this little guy during my lunch break. Its a toasted bun, a hamburger patty, sliced gouda, bacon, fried egg over easy, a square hash brown, with fresh made hp style sauce, and mayonnaise. Don’t forget the 1/2 inch thick tomato slice! The taste was off the charts. This was no ziplock wonder. It was freshly fried in the coastal mountains. It was so tasty I felt like I was doing something wrong.
The “Garibaldi Hotdog”
From: Harry C

The “PBJ on Whole Wheat”
From: Rob Manson
Location: Base of the West Lion, Vancouver BC
About the sandwich:
Adams natural smooth salted peanut butter and Western Family blueberry jam or Safeway 100% whole wheat bread. As a day hike from Cypress bowl to the base of the West Lion is not for the faint at heart, you best bring more than one sandwich and plenty of water in the peak of summer. Many will mock this sandwich, but as a friend said, “It tells a story of pure determination, grit and survival. Just you, your crappy sandwich, and a rock. You are one tough mutha!”
The ” The TurkATCH”
From: Brad
Location: Pemberton Music Festival
About the sandwich:
This one is aimed squarely at the Denied Sandwiches category. While crafting this magnificent sandwich at lunch time to prepare me for the imbibing of an unmentionable number of beers, my friends commented on how incredibly delicious it looked and how envious they were of my forthcoming sandwich devouring session. I proceeded to tell them of a magical website where sandwiches in alpine terrain could be remembered forever, and thus they insisted on the taking of this photo in the hopes it might make the cut and achieve immortality on said site.
The “After the Sandwich”
From: Magi
Location: Campomuello, Italy
About the sandwich:
The sandwich went down too fast to snap a shot – a delicious steak of Asiago cheese amidst two halves of a baguette. It was followed up by this fruity cheesecake, fresh from the Refugio at Campomuello.
The “Tomato Brie on Dry Cranberry Bread”
From: ryan bougie
Location: Peak Chair, Whistler B.C
About the sandwich:
With my girlfriend out of town our house has run low on fresh groceries to make my own sandwich so I purchased one from the Alpine Cafe in Alpine Meadows Subdivision. It was a particularly chilly day in the mountains. After taking the time on the peak chair to snap the appropriate photo I was not sure if I had the necessary dexterity to take it out of its wrapper to consume. I decided to hold off on eating it then and there and retreated to lower elevations to enjoy my morning purchase. It was alright
The “Matt’s sardines on raisin bread”
From: Paul
Location: Carson Pass, Sierra Nevada, CA
About the sandwich:
All that salt and oil is great on a long ski tour. From a peak just south of Round Top near Carson Pass in the Sierra Nevada.
The “Super Midnight American Burger (so named in France)”
From: Marc B
Location: Chamonix, France
About the sandwich:
Not sure if you can tell amongst all those patties, buns, cheeses and condiments, but there is also a serving of fries in this glorious Alpine Sandwich. It was partaken of apres-ski in Chamonix, France in 2003 with my then girlfriend, now wife of 7 years. Really my happy marriage and 3 year old son could all be traced back to the Super Midnight American Burger in the Alps experience.
The “Jammy Zack-Wrap”
From: Bridget
Location: En route to Sapphire Col hut, Glacier National Park
About the sandwich:
Hand picked, sugar-free, home made blackberry jam; BC Granny Smith apple slices; golden Cariboo Lillooet honey; crunchy PB; multi grain wrap. Such a great combination of sweet and sour flavours, with carbs and protein providing energy for a steep skin track. My favourite ski partner and I picked the berries, made the jam, and met the bee keeper, which made the summer flavours all the sweeter as we enjoyed my birthday skiing powder in Rogers Pass! (PS the original Zack Wrap has apple slices, PB, honey, & is named after Bougie’s friend 🙂
The “Triple Layer BLT with everything”
From: Jonah Versman
Location: Castle Rock State Park, Northern California
About the sandwich:
3 layers of bacon staggered between crisp lettuce and succulent tomatoes. Garlic sauce, mayo, pickles, onion, banana peppers, and more bacon garnished this sandwich to an unreal state of perfection. The crisp Northern California mountain air and a large jug of fresh water made the sandwich experience one for the books.
The “Castle Chicken and Dijon”
From: Adrian Bostock
Location: Big Paradise, Tyax Lodge. BC
About the sandwich:
I am not 100% sure of the pedigree of this sandwich. Chicken, swiss, dijon for sure, looks like rye bread?. Bought from Tyax Lodge, made by Anna the chef. Brad looks content eating it was we neared Castle pass and sat down for a bite.
The “Prociutto n’ Swiss Special”
From: Ben
About the sandwich:
Prosciutto was on manager’s special at the QFC in Enumclaw, as well as kinda fancy swiss cheese. Simple, delicious, and nutritious on a wheat bagel for a ski descent of the Fuhrer Finger on Mount Rainier!
The “Rethelito”
From: Jonathan Doherty
Location: Grizzly Peak, Rogers Pass BC
About the Sandwich: Decided to deviate from the norm with an alpine burrito! Home made spicy lime tortilla, black beans, chorizo, peppers, mushrooms, onions, pepper jack cheese, spinach, and cholula hot sauce.
