Welcome to Alpine Sandwiches. The story of the site is no more complex than me wanting to combine two passions and share what I have done. My name is Daniel Kliger, I currently live in Pemberton BC, and I am an avid outdoor enthusiast.
My love for sandwiches probably grew from eating at a few great spots when I was younger. I grew up skiing in Stowe, Vermont, where there used to be a sandwich shop that was the be all end all: The Brown Bag Deli. Amongst all their sandwiches; the Honeymooner, the Sharkbite, the Sweet Melissa… the Sierra was my personal favorite. Chicken salad thrown into a pan with swiss cheese, banana peppers, onions, and BBQ sauce served with a fork inside a freshly baked baguette. This was the sandwich that rivaled my enthusiasm to drive to Stowe from Montreal for the skiing. Another shout out goes to the Club Roll (ordered with Swiss cheese and NO tongue) at the Snowdon Delicatessen in Montreal.
Over the past several years I have built up a collection of sandwich photos while ski touring, climbing and hiking. I realized that most people don’t climb a peak and look forward to their sandwich on top as much as the view. Well friends, I do.
A good sandwich to me does not need to be fancy. The key is freshness, which is quite difficult to preserve in the backcountry. I encourage folks to get out into the wilderness and to bring along a decent sandwich. Send in your sandwich photo and it will be posted in the club section of the site.
