The “Inbread Joffre”
From: Kim
Location: Upper Joffre Lake, Joffre Provincial Park, BC
About the sandwich:
With fresh clouds rolling in over the Matier Glacier at Upper Joffre Lake, this sandwich hit the spot serving as the perfect pick-me-up for plentiful rock scrambling before the return journey.
The incubation time in my backpack on the hike up made for a perfect level of almost melty mozzarella between layers of smoked turkey, crispy cucumbers and garden-fresh spinach topped off with a spicy mustard between two slices of whole wheat with quinoa and flax seed bread slices. Game of Thrones reference in the title should not mar you opinion of this delicacy, as I would not have chosen any other hiking lunch.
The ” Raid The Kitchen Deluxe”
From: Fred Agger
Location: Mt Whyte, Banff NP
About the sandwich:
This sandwich was rapidly (but thoughtfully) whipped together with a few choice ingredients from the teahouse kitchen. In my plunderings I managed to procure some silky smooth and garlicy hummus, thin sliced cucumbers for some green, tortilla chips for the crunch and some Sriracha to bring it all together. This enticing combination of sandwich toppers got real friendly between a couple slices of oatmeal brown bread. I ripped into this sammy on a sunny day atop Mt Whyte after a tricky climb and scramble with views of Mounts Fairview, Aberdeen, Lefroy, Victoria and the local giant Temple in the back. A downright decent day, to say the least.
The “Veg and Turk Pedalstone”
From: Brad Christie
Location: Keystone Standard Basin Trail, Revelstoke BC
About the sandwich:
On the left, hummus, artichokes, peppers and lettuce on a freshly baked kaiser bun.
On the right, garden lettuce and basil, smoked turkey, sriracha and mayo on some king’s bread. Needless to say, delicious and nutritious creations on their own, made much more rewarding riding radly into the schralpine.
The “Sweet ‘n Sour Summit Sanny”
From: Colin Young
Location: Needle Summit by the Coquihalla Highway, BC
About the sandwich:
Scramble up Needle Summit this past weekend was fantastic! Good steep bits, great cliffs and drop offs, and lots of critters along the way. After such a sweet ascent, a sweet n’ sour sandwich was in order.
Sourdough bread and regular sharp yellow mustard for the sour; homemade sweet pickles from the spring, honey mustard, and honey ham for the sweet. A happy food coma/summit nap was enjoyed immediately afterwards, good day all around.
The “PBJ on Whole Wheat”
From: Rob Manson
Location: Base of the West Lion, Vancouver BC
About the sandwich:
Adams natural smooth salted peanut butter and Western Family blueberry jam or Safeway 100% whole wheat bread. As a day hike from Cypress bowl to the base of the West Lion is not for the faint at heart, you best bring more than one sandwich and plenty of water in the peak of summer. Many will mock this sandwich, but as a friend said, “It tells a story of pure determination, grit and survival. Just you, your crappy sandwich, and a rock. You are one tough mutha!”
The ” The TurkATCH”
From: Brad
Location: Pemberton Music Festival
About the sandwich:
This one is aimed squarely at the Denied Sandwiches category. While crafting this magnificent sandwich at lunch time to prepare me for the imbibing of an unmentionable number of beers, my friends commented on how incredibly delicious it looked and how envious they were of my forthcoming sandwich devouring session. I proceeded to tell them of a magical website where sandwiches in alpine terrain could be remembered forever, and thus they insisted on the taking of this photo in the hopes it might make the cut and achieve immortality on said site.
The “Turkey Pulled Pork Dominator”
From: Brad
Location: Zopkios, Coquihalla Recreation Area
About the sandwich:
This sandwich was perhaps the most delicious sandwich I’ve ever eaten in alpine terrain. Sadly, (or fortunately depending on your perspective!) it was also dumping fresh pow that day, so there isn’t much of a view. Few things beat a well made sandwich after a long skin up, or really anything else for that matter.
The ” Damn (Fog) Ham”
From: Colin Young
Location: David Peak, Howe Sound Crest Trail
About the sandwich:
Day 2 of a foggy, rainy, cloudy go of the Howe Sound Crest Trail. 30 odd km, and many peaks totaling around 2500 meters of elevation gain, and I’m afraid this view on top of David Peak was the best we could manage.
That sandwich was unreal though.
Good sunflower and flax bread, honey dijon mustard, generous layers of ham, sharp cheddar, and some fresh spinach for color and texture. The scenery was limited, but the flavor reached new heights.
The “Hugo sesame Hummus”
From: Judy Pryce
Location: Bedwell Lake, Strathcona BC
About the sandwich:
Flatbead hummus and grape tomatoes. So good!
The “Cheesy Chester’s Dirty South”
From: Mike Lees
Location: Mt. Chester, Alberta
About the sandwich:
It began with a Cheese Bun, cut in the middle, reinforced with several slices of creamy Havarti, the creamier the better. Then the Cajun chicken slices are added, providing a spicy sensation unheard of this side of the Mississippi. Tomatoes add some moisture making a drink unnecessary to wash it down. Simple, yet a true alpine delicacy.
The “After the Sandwich”
From: Magi
Location: Campomuello, Italy
About the sandwich:
The sandwich went down too fast to snap a shot – a delicious steak of Asiago cheese amidst two halves of a baguette. It was followed up by this fruity cheesecake, fresh from the Refugio at Campomuello.
The “Gnarwegian Double D (Dumpster Dive) Special”
From: Charlotte
Location: Kvaløya, Norway
About the sandwich:
Giving ingredients a chance at a second life, all components of this sandwich were rescued from grocery store dumpsters and brought together to produce this marvelous mountaintop masterpiece. Mildly stale whole wheat bread encasing a delectable filling of (expired?) shrimp salad, some type of ham with a name I can’t pronounce, Norvegia white cheese, semi-wilty lettuce, and mustard that came out of a tube. Along with a bluebird day and fantastic views of fjords and mountains, this experience took al fresco dining to a whole new elevation. With this new surge of carbs and protein, I was able to continue my day of total radness in true Gnarwegian style.
The “The Veggie Motherload”
From: Ailsa Naismith
Location: Smoke Bluffs, Squamish, B. C.
About the sandwich:
In a wild attempt to one-up the Egg McMuffins at the McDonald’s below us in Squamish Valley …
On a poppy- and sesame-seed bagel: fried egg sunny-side down, avocado hummus, spinach, sliced carrot and tomato salsa, seasoned with lemon juice, thyme and black pepper. Enjoyed at the foot of Burger and Fries routes, Smoke Bluffs Provincial Park, on the best day of 2014! Couldn’t get sandwich to top of climb, sadly.
The “Tomato Brie on Dry Cranberry Bread”
From: ryan bougie
Location: Peak Chair, Whistler B.C
About the sandwich:
With my girlfriend out of town our house has run low on fresh groceries to make my own sandwich so I purchased one from the Alpine Cafe in Alpine Meadows Subdivision. It was a particularly chilly day in the mountains. After taking the time on the peak chair to snap the appropriate photo I was not sure if I had the necessary dexterity to take it out of its wrapper to consume. I decided to hold off on eating it then and there and retreated to lower elevations to enjoy my morning purchase. It was alright
